Query for the Hive Mind

A friend of mine is looking for a postage-stamp-sized computer which can run either a Java Virtual Machine or an entire Linux kernel for fifty dollars. Does anyone have any suggestions for a moderately cheap, Java equivalent of the BASIC Stamp?

  1. The Maker crowd seems fond of the Arduino, which according to Wikipedia has a custom IDE and is generally programmed in Java, although it can also be used with the Java-based Processing language/IDE.

That said, the core of the Arduino seems to just be an Atmel AVR chip, so maybe that’s another possibility?
