That photo gave me a moment of disorientation. That spider sculpture stands outside the National Gallery here in Ottawa — but that’s not tha National Gallery (or anything else recognizably Ottawish) in the background. Then I discovered there’s actually about half-a-dozen identical castings of it (it’s called Maman, by Louise Bourgeois).
The building in the background is the Guggenheim museum, in Bilbao, Spain, designed by none other than Frank Gehry, who’s Strata Center was so fondly described in a previous post :)
I expect the Gugg stands up to the local climate better than the Stata Center.
There’s another casting of it outside the Tate modern in London. From the right angle it looms rather impressively over St Pauls.
