My Cheap Shot of the Day

This is the Archbishop of Canterbury trying (and failing) to speak about science:

Dr Williams admitted that Neo Darwinism, a theory supported by Atheist Professor Richard Dawkins, is “most problematic” to theology, but he called it “a pseudo science” and “deeply vulnerable to intellectual challenge because it is trying to be a theology.”

And here I thought Richard Dawkins’s professorship was endowed by Charles Simonyi, not Bob Atheist!

  1. Here’s my Too-Serious Reply of the Day:

The capitalization comes from the original article, found here , which according to the web site was the product of Joanna Sugden, who is described there as “a trainee religion reporter”.

    Indeed!

For, if you read the entire article, Ms. Sugden’s text is filled with odd phrasing: “Creationism” with an upper-case ‘C’, for an example, which would imply that ‘Creationism’ is a fully-formed faith outfit on its own like ‘Catholicism’ or ‘Scientology’, rather than a doctrine which in different forms appears in a variety of contexts, even non-religious ones, as in the example of the sanitized version of ID. From there, it’s a small leap to suppose that she imagined ‘Atheism’ to be not just a philosophical position, but a belief system.

Ironically, this hyper-capitalized style is probably intended to show ‘respect’ for upper-case Atheism as a proper belief, as respectable as upper-case Anglicanism, righto, pip-pip, old chap.

That would have been my point, most likely, had I been in the mood to make a serious point. All too often, I’m not eager to do so, but the world seems to demand it.
